Synopsis / Summary / Résumé

One alien melts to a puddle, another procreates per colourful threesome, and yet another convulses desperately as it is brutally invaded by a parasite. ‘Symbionts’ is a cinematic, observational journey through a dynamic alien ecosystem, in which a variety of eccentric alien life forms are encountered. The film portrays both the dazzling beauty, as well as the unforgiving cruelty inherent to their symbiotic interactions.

The film uses a unique visual style by combining digital 3D-animation and abstracting the animations through a self-made texturing tool. This technique was developed in order to portray the alien world in its own distinct visual language that introduces abstraction whilst still maintaining the suggestion of a concrete reality to us, humans. The result is an intense and vibrant visual language that consists of dense, repetitive textures and boiling surfaces.
