DE: In dem vorliegenden konzeptionellen Portfolio dient das Buch „Bartimäus und das Amulett von Samarkand“ von Jonathan Stroud als Grundlage für das Visual Development und Character Design. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, mich voll und ganz auf einen speziellen Teilbereich der Animation zu fokussieren: Visual Development. Zu diesem Zweck konzentrierte ich mich auf das Digital Painting mit Adobe Photoshop und das 3D Modellieren mit Zbrush.

EN: In the presented Portfolio all the existing Concept Arts and Character Designs are based on the book “Bartimaeus - the Amulet of Samarkand” by Jonathan Stroud. The aim of the Portfolio was to gain strength into a specific section of Animation: Visual Development. Therefore I set my focus on Digital Painting with Adobe Photoshop and 3D Modelling in ZBrush.

Buchzusammenfassung

“In einer Parallelwelt, in der das Parlament des heutigen London von mächtigen Magiern beherrscht wird... Mit nur 5 Jahren wird Nathanael von seinen Eltern an die Regierung verkauft und kommt somit unter die Fittiche von Mr. Underwood, einem unbedeutenden Regierungsabgeordneten, welcher Nahtanael in seinen eigenen Haushalt aufnimmt und ihm die Geheimnisse der grossen Magie beibringen soll. Nathanael erweist sich als intelligent, ehrgeizig, standhaft und wissensbegierig, jedoch erkennt sein Zaubermeister sein Talent nicht und Nathanael versucht verzweifelt, aber erfolglos, ihn von seinen Stärken zu überzeugen. Im Alter von 10 Jahren wird Nathanael von Simon Lovelace, einem einflussreichen und mächtigen Magier, öffentlich an einer Veranstaltung gedemütigt. Verletzt in seinem Stolz schwört Nathanael, ihm das zurückzuzahlen. Ein ganzes Jahr lang plant er minutiös seinen Rachefeldzug. Nathanael beschwört den 5000 Jahre alten Djinni Bartimäus aus der Dämonenwelt herauf, um das Amulett von Samarkand aus dem Besitz des Magiers Simon Lovelace zu stehlen. Dieses leichtsinnige und übermütige Unterfangen bringt die Beiden in tödliche Gefahr, aus welcher nur Bartimäus sie zu retten vermag.“

Summary of the book

“In a parallel modern-day London, Parliament is in the hands of a powerful group of magicians… Sold to the government by his parents, 5 year-old Nathaniel is an apprentice to Mr. Underwood, an unimportant ministry official who takes Nathaniel into his household and teaches him magic. Clever, ambitious, strong-willed and hungry for knowledge, Nathaniel is impatient to prove his worth and is constantly frustrated by his dull master, who fails to recognise his talent and thinks very little of him. Nathaniel is little more than 10 years old when Simon Lovelace, a rising and powerful magician, humiliates him publicly. Nathaniel vows to pay him back and spends a full year preparing his revenge. When he musters the strength to summon the 5,000-year-old Djinni Bartimaeus to avenge Lovelace by stealing the powerful Amulet of Samarkand, the boy magician plunges into a situation more dangerous and deadly than anything he could ever imagine.”
