Recycling was Avant-Garde in the arts long before it became a part of our everyday practices. Jay Leyda wrote about the concept of re-using materials in the movies in 1964 and when he did so, he knew his art history: Marcel Duchamp's exhibited his famous "ready-made" installation "Fountain" as early as 1917. Found Footage is the given name of films made with pre-existing materials – a practice not exclusive to the movies. At a very early stage in the history of film, people have started to file through their own stock, heaps of outtakes or discontinued films, and archives, to re-use materials they or others have shot before. However, in the US film avant-garde of the 1960ies a rise in such practices occurred and with filmic images becoming part of the everyday, these practices have spread to almost every aspect of audiovisual production. Today, the use of found materials to revisit their superficial or hidden meanings is a prolific practice both in the visual arts and in pop culture. It's known in other fields under the names of appropriation art, archival art, remix, sampling, etc. The course presents and discusses examples mainly of artistic production with found materials in the movies and in fine arts. It will include some reading. Literatur:
