Content / Inhalt

Socially engaged art, community-based art, participatory, interventionist, research based, and collaborative art – these are all recent terms used to describe art in the expanded field of socially engaged practices. They all describe, with different emphasis, artworks, that deal with social and political issues, sometimes using activist practices and shifting the importance from the work as a finished product to the process of creating it. But, as Alfredo Cramerotti writes, “it is not that the urgency of certain issues has only gained visibility in the arts; rather, this urgency is currently so high that artists cannot leave it outside their practice, and feel the necessity to ‘inform’ the public.”

  • In this course, we want to watch and discuss examples of artworks, that deal with current economic, societal and politic issues in a way, that aims at engaging viewers, rather than merely informing them. We will discuss which methods these works employs to reach which goals, and how we can use those methods for our own projects. We will also pay particular attention to different presentation contexts—such as television, cinema, film festivals, art and exhibition spaces, or public space—and their respective requirements for artistic and engaging productions.

The aim is to be able to integrate the above practices into one’s own practice to create meaningful artistic productions that can have an impact on its viewers and society at large.
